Background of the Study
Gender inequality remains a pervasive challenge affecting economic opportunities and social development. In Nsukka Local Government Area, Enugu State, disparities in access to education, employment, and financial resources have long hindered the full economic participation of women. Historical cultural norms and systemic biases have created barriers that limit women’s access to entrepreneurial ventures and formal job markets (Ifeanyi, 2023). Despite progressive policies aimed at promoting gender equity, significant gaps persist in economic opportunities available to women. Recent studies underscore the importance of addressing gender disparities as a pathway to broader economic growth and social justice (Chinwe, 2024). This investigation examines the multifaceted effects of gender inequality on economic opportunities in Nsukka, analyzing how institutional practices and societal attitudes contribute to unequal outcomes. The research draws on quantitative data and qualitative interviews to provide a comprehensive overview of the challenges faced by women and to propose actionable strategies for enhancing gender equity in economic participation (Ebere, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Gender inequality in Nsukka significantly restricts women’s access to economic opportunities. Structural barriers, discriminatory practices, and limited access to education and capital prevent women from fully participating in the local economy. These disparities not only hamper individual growth but also impede overall economic development and social progress in the area. Addressing these issues is essential to fostering inclusive economic growth and reducing poverty. This study seeks to uncover the underlying causes of gender inequality and its impact on economic opportunities (Ifeanyi, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the extent of gender inequality in economic participation.
To identify barriers that restrict women’s access to opportunities.
To recommend strategies for promoting gender equity in economic activities.
Research Questions:
What are the key factors contributing to gender inequality in Nsukka?
How does gender inequality affect women’s economic opportunities?
What policy interventions can enhance economic participation for women?
Research Hypotheses:
